A central vacuum system or separate industrial vacuums?

This is how we’ll tailor the right solution for you

Choosing the right dust collection solution is a critical step for ensuring efficiency and workplace safety in the metal industry and machine shops. With over 40 years of experience at Suomen Imurikeskus Oy, we have seen firsthand how equipment choices directly impact the smooth flow of production and cleaning costs. People often wonder whether a single industrial vacuum cleaner, several separate units, or a built-in central vacuum system would be the most effective solution for a production facility.

When is a standalone industrial vacuum cleaner a good choice?

High-quality Eurovac industrial vacuums offer a flexible and portable solution even for the most demanding applications. A standalone industrial vacuum cleaner is the natural choice when vacuuming needs are concentrated on specific individual workstations at a time, or when the unit needs to be moved flexibly around production facilities. The advantages of a stand-alone vacuum cleaner include quick setup and reliable suction power wherever it’s needed, without the need to install fixed ductwork.

When is it time to consider a central vacuum system?

Although industrial vacuums are versatile, in very large production environments and under continuous use, the nature of the work may require a different approach. When cleaning or dust removal is required regularly throughout the day at multiple locations simultaneously, managing numerous separate vacuums begins to eat into employees’ time and their interest in cleaning. Moving numerous vacuums around, emptying separate dust bins, and maintaining filters takes time away from productive work. Furthermore, hoses crisscrossing the floors can pose a tripping hazard in tight spaces.

Customer Case Study

The welding process was sped up with retractable suction hoses

One of our clients in the metal manufacturing industry had a very large warehouse that was divided by partitions into welding cells measuring about ten square meters each. Each cell contained a welding machine, a workbench, and one employee. An essential part of the work process was that, after welding and grinding, the workpiece had to be cleaned of grinding dust and metal spatter from between the complex structures.

Since work progressed at its own pace in each cell, vacuuming was required frequently and simultaneously. A fixed central vacuum system with retractable hoses proved to be the most effective solution for this site. Nowadays, an employee finishes their task, pulls the hose down from the ceiling or wall of their workstation, quickly vacuums up the debris, and immediately moves on to the next step of the process. After the central vacuum system was installed:

  • There are no hoses or cables lying on the floors.
  • Workplace safety has improved.
  • Employees do not need to worry about emptying or moving the vacuum cleaners.

How do you choose and size the right solution?

Whether you’re looking for a single industrial vacuum cleaner or an extensive central vacuum system, designing the right equipment always starts with a careful assessment of your needs. The experts at Suomen Imurikeskus Oy will review the following points to ensure you get the right solution:

Design criterion

Design criterion

Practical Implications

Number of concurrent users

Number of concurrent users

Directly determines the suction power required. Too little power leads to a decrease in suction power for users, but also possibly to blockage of the piping if many points are open at the same time.

Material to be vacuumed

Heavy metal requires a different air velocity and pressure in the pipeline than, for example, light wood dust.

Scope and Area of the Project

Indicates the length of the piping, which is used to calculate power losses and optimize installation routes.

Legislation and ATEX

Certain materials are explosive, which means the entire system requires safety devices and ATEX-compliant design.
